Unfortunately, the Star-Telegram has mis-quoted me in their article today. Following is the email, in its entirety, that I sent to the reporter, Terry Evans:
Terry,
I read the article that you wrote only to be surprised to find many inaccuracies in your quotes from me.
1. "Gebhart said his first run for Place 2 in 2008, which he lost in a runoff, was a wake-up call."
- I said that the election of 2008 was a wake-up call, and that it made me realize that voting alone was not enough; I needed to be more involved.
- I ran for office in 2009, not 2008.
2. "Gebhart said he believes that his participation in local Republican and Tea Party groups has developed a conservative perspective necessary for representing his neighbors on the council."
- I did not say that I participated in Tea Party groups. While I identify with their mission and goals, I have not been an active participant and it would be unfair to the people who have invested their time and effort to say that I have also.
- My conservative perspective did not come from participation in the local party; my participation in the local party is a result of my conservative perspective and my desire to return our country to principles of limited government and personal responsibility.
3. "If I get in, I'll be outnumbered and voted down every time," he said. "But I want to have that dialog so we can at least throw out that there's a different way to do this."
- I said that I "might" get voted down every time. I can't know that until and unless I am voted in by the citizens of Bedford. I am not seeking to be divisive or needlessly argumentative; I just want to ensure that there is more open dialog and discussion when making decisions that impact our city.
I appreciate your time and I hope that you can correct this article to reflect my actual responses.
Thanks,
Dave Gebhart
